Boat Names
Over a period of several months I collected a
number of boat names from which I could choose one
that would appeal to me for the Paradox sailing
cruiser I am building. I took quite a while before
I made my choice.
The naming of a boat is usually a subjective
business because her name has to be significant for
the one doing the choosing. I wanted something that
would be short and easy to spell out when using the
VHF, particularly in an emergency. Choosing a name
like 'The Sword of Damocles' would invite
disaster, not only for its inappropriateness, but
for the impracticality of having to phonetically
spell the name while in a distress situation. I
also wanted a name that one could shout with
clarity so that people could easily attract my
attention.
Ideally, I felt the name should be indicative of
the boat's character, while being decidedly
feminine. I wanted something that would be
uplifting and dignified. Her name should be related
to her intended purpose, which in my case will be
for serious coastal cruising - if I can maintain my
agility and fitness into my early seventies.
I shortlisted names that matched the above
criteria and earmarked them with asterisks. After
considering them for several weeks and taking heed
of advice and suggestions given to me by those who
visited my web site, I made the ultimate choice.
She would simply be named, 'Faith'.
My decision came about because of my study of
the Bible. At the end of Chapter 13 of the First
Book of Corinthians, Paul the apostle states, 'now
these three remain: faith, hope, love. But the
greatest of these is love.' The Book of Hebrews in
chapter 11 considers the importance of faith, and
it seems to me that the saints who abounded in
faith showed the greatest love. So the acquisition
of faith is fundamental; without it, where is the
gift of love? For me, 'faith' takes precedence.
When making my choice of name I certainly needed
faith in my ability and resolve to complete the
building of my Paradox. I shall also require faith
to take her to sea, but most of all; I shall need
faith in my Maker to look after me while I'm at
sea. It's no wonder I've settled on 'Faith'
as the boat's name.
