Micro-Sailboat

One of the definitions given in my dictionary for a metaphor is, 'A thing regarded as symbolic of something else.'
John Welsford, when corresponding with me about 'Tread Lightly', his micro-singlehander, metaphorically described her as, 'a short, well-rounded, working class woman, bustling along with brisk and purposeful steps; a froth of petticoats swirling and head held high!'
What poetic imagination!
My reply to him contained the words, " 'Tread Lightly' does haunt me. I like her sweet, rather comfortable and snug lines."
In fact, between you and me, I'm totally entranced by her. I picture being seated in her deep cockpit, my arm resting on the bridge deck, while I steer with the free hand. Through the laminated tiller I feel her trembling response to the wind's call. Reclining on the cockpit coaming, I find there is ample space to spread my legs and feet. I relax, knowing there is sufficient ballast to keep 'TL' from capsizing in all, but the most horrendous conditions. If I should need shelter for the night, her comfortable cabin would provide it. Her lockers contain ample food and provisions for a week's pottering among the numerous creeks, swatchways and open stretches of the River Thames.
My mind begins to explore an adventure where there is a sense of freedom - of being entirely self-sufficient; alone, but not lonely; having the company of my trustworthy vessel.
Will my imaginings ever become a reality? I wonder?
