He went on to say, "She is built upright on a flat panel bottom, with sawn plywood frames and bulkheads erected so that with the seat fronts and stem they form a self-jigging egg crate structure that is extremely strong for its weight. I would estimate the build time at around 150 man hours for a capable amateur. It's simple work, and the 11 sheets of A1 plans are detailed for first-time builders. To help them, there is a 10 page Building Guide and I am available on e-mail (jwboatdesigns@xtra.co.u.nz )to assist. The little story that goes with the design tells how the the design came about, and although her ancestry is East Coast North American, I think that she would look pretty much at home on the beach of any western country. The hull shape is thoroughly modern in spite of the traditional styling, and she should be able to put miles behind her in pretty quick time. I recall being inspired by Uffa Fox's story of crossing the Channel in his sailing canoe. Walkabout would be safer and a lot more capable than that, and the thought of a trip from your area down the coast to France, then north up to "Riddle of the Sands" country and into the inland waterways of Holland is intriguing, indeed." ![]() PLANS for Walkabout can be obtained from John Welsford at jwboatdesigns@xtra.co.u.nz Prices: NZ ?
