In the USA Hugh Horton and Meade Gougeon are using high tech materials to produce decked canoes that can be sailed and paddled with equal efficiency. Factors at the heart of their designs for hulls and rigs are lightness, strength and low drag. Materials such as carbon fibre, Kevlar and a variety of plastics are incorporated into their elegant and highly functional craft. Unfortunately, the use of expensive materials, some of which require much time and expertise in handling, can mean boats are beyond the reach of many.

As I see it, the real challenge is to use cheaper materials and simple methods of construction, but end up with canoes equally efficient at sailing and paddling. Perhaps I'm asking for the impossible?

In the UK, Paul Fisher has taken up my challenge. He has designed a 50/50 decked canoe which will be easy to build and cheap for my pocket. I am hoping she will be a great success and become a popular project for young and old alike.

Although I'm expecting my canoe to be fast, it's unlikely I shall want to race her. That's a path well explored by competitive aficionados who race extreme versions of sailing canoes on both sides of the Atlantic and in Australia. My canoe will be used for cruising and day sailing.

If you're interested in designing a 50/50 decked canoe you'll find several illustrations here to stimulate your imagination. All of the pictures have been copied from various web sites. If I've broken any copyright I hereby apologize. Since the addresses of their web sites are published at the bottom of the page, I suspect their owners will not be too upset. However, if they want me to remove any photographs I shall comply with their wishes at the earliest opportunity.
