'Bumper'.

Introduction

On Friday, 13th March 04, I became the owner of a Newbridge Virgo Voyager with the name of 'Bumper'. (Not exactly my choice, but a name I shall stick with.)

Although she was built in 1982 I found she was in good condition. I first saw her afloat at Emsworth Yacht Harbour, Chichester Harbour, adjacent to the Solent, UK, and it was there I found myself attracted to her wholesome features. Her voluminous hull boasted 6' headroom and a beam of 8' 4", on a hull length of 23'. With a waterline of only 19' 10" I didn't expect her to be fast, but she had a Bukh DV10, single cylinder diesel engine and most importantly for me, a junk sail on a tapered Needlespar mast. That meant I would be able to reef without delay or difficulty and furthermore it could be done from the cockpit without having any need to go on deck; hence she would be a safe boat in any sort of seaway. Another attractive feature was her small draught of 2' 10" which would be ideal for East Coast sailing.

April 1st 2004 brought the start of the new sailing season and I had to vacate the marina before that date, therefore I determined to sail 'Bumper' to her new home on the River Crouch. Here is an account of the Delivery Trip.
