Shyauk

Shyauk at the start of the 1974 Round Britain Race, Plymouth.     The skipper, exhausted after retiring from the Race because of gales and gear failure.     Sunset after retiring from the Race.

'Shyauk' was jointly owned by my brother Fred and I.  We entered her in the 1974 Round Britain Race, but the weather was exceedingly bad. Several participants retired from the race - some because of gear failure and others because they were exhausted.

The Race started from Plymouth; the first leg finished at Cork. From there we encountered atrocious weather forcing us to lay a-hull for many hours over a five day period. The tiller fitting which held it to rudder stock partially failed and we became utterly fatigued.  We knew we could not finish the Race within the time limit and therefore we retired.

On our arrival at the Scillies we discovered there had been reports that we were missing - much to the consternation of our wives.

Having attempted the Race without completing the course, we sold 'Shyauk'.
