Hilyard

Wanderer after being antifoulded at Starcross.     Wanderer.

The first boat I bought with a cabin was a Hilyard two-and-half tonner.  Her name was 'Wanderer'.  She was kept on a mooring at Starcross.

I mainly used her for day sailing, but did some cruises to Torquay and Brixham.

After buying her from a gentleman who had laid her up at a yard by the Percuil river, near Falmouth, a friend and I sailed her to Starcross, but not without adventure, because we experienced a force 8 gale.  The pushpit was damaged by a wave when it swamped the cockpit.

We arrived at Brixham and a new crew joined the boat for a rough passage to Exmouth.  Entering the Exe over the bar was a real test for the boat and crew.  We very nearly did not make it, because the engine failed to fire properly and the mainsail was torn.
